FAQ
Does COSIS.net make publishers unnecessary?
No. Editors want publishers as business partners in order to secure the long-term success of their journal. Company boards must generally react to changes in the political sphere at short notice.
Publishers profit from their connection to COSIS.net by becoming more familiar with their community and by gaining the ability to offer more services, such as selling books in the COSIS.net shop or organising congresses/conventions.
Can COSIS.net produce books, too?
Yes. Many books, especially anthologies, can be seen as collections of essays/chapters – similar to a special edition of a journal. COSIS.net is not as well suited for workflows involving illustrated books or school textbooks.
Is COSIS.net only intended for geoscientists?
No. COSIS.net was developed with geoscientists in mind but is also suitable for all other scientific communities. Through branding, the system can be used under a completely different name in order to service medical doctors or philosophers, for instance.
Is the publishing system also suitable for magazines?
Yes and no. It has been optimised for scientific OpenAccess journals and their extremely slender production process. Since COSIS.net offers a role-based workflow for the production of textswith around 10-30 pages, it can be used to produce magazines, with certain limitations. Already, you can define as many different types of articles as you wish for each journal, each of which will be allocated its own workflow (editorial, main article, news, register etc.). — thinking further, advertisements may also be edited in this manner.
Since COSIS.net administers data and the respective workflow status while at the same time notifying and monitoring the next responsible workflow member, it is not dependent on a particular piece of editing software — whether it is MS Word, OpenOffice, InDesign, Photoshop, TeX, or any other.
Of course, the admissible formats can be limited, in which case COSIS will reject attempts to upload files in unsuitable formats. We are in the process of developing an online editor that can be used by external authors to submit their contributions, by editors to revise them, and by layout designers to download and open the articles in their layout program.
For design-heavy magazines, in which graphical content tends to be more important than text (consumer magazines, yellow press), other tools are far more suitable, of course.
Is COSIS.net also available in German?
Since COSIS.net has been used almost exclusively by international associations up to now, its user interface is English. Should you requirethe possibility for your members to change the user interface to German or another language, we will be happy to arrange this for you.
